The Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND), in its efforts to enhance access to renewable energy services in the Niger Delta, collaborated with the U.S. Government-led Power Africa Health Electrification and Telecommunications Alliance (HETA) to electrify at least 10,000 healthcare centers in Africa through decentralized renewable energy resources.
Through this intervention, PIND, in August 2023, received a preliminary grant to procure and install solar power equipment and distribute meters and other electricity infrastructure for healthcare centers in last-mile coastal communities in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region. Between August – November 2023, PIND partnered with 7 private sector power developers to install energy cabins in 12 healthcare facilities across three states in the region.
The Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND) was featured in a Harvard Th. Chan (School of Health) publication titled ‘Integrating Spatial Analysis and Community Response: The PIND Peace Map.’ PIND received a commendation for its commitment to fostering peace and stability through innovative strategies in the Niger Delta region. The publication highlights PIND’s groundbreaking Early Warning and Early Response (EWER) system as a tool for monitoring and reporting conflicts in the region. This integrated approach merges technology, community engagement, and proactive response mechanisms to mitigate violence and conflict in the region significantly.

The Three Pillars of PIND’s EWER System
PIND’s EWER system is anchored on three critical components, each playing a unique role in PIND’s peacebuilding efforts:
- Technology Component (The Peace Map): At the forefront of PIND’s EWER system is the Peace Map, a sophisticated geospatial mapping technology. This platform aggregates conflict and violence data from various sources across the Niger Delta region, including getting firsthand conflict reports from trained conflict monitors and other parts of Nigeria as well, creating a comprehensive database of conflict incidents. The Peace Map is a tool for users to identify hotspots and track the intensity of violent conflicts over time in specific geographic locations.
- Community Component (Leveraging Local Expertise)
- Response System: Integrating technology and community insights culminates in a robust response system.
PIND’s Early Warning and Early Response system exemplifies the power of innovation in addressing complex challenges like conflict and violence. By combining technology with community engagement, PIND has established a model that not only addresses the symptoms of violence but also tackles its root causes. The success of the EWER system in the Niger Delta is a result to PIND’s dedication to peace, stability, and development in the Niger Delta region, Nigeria.
