CASSAVA VALUE CHAIN PROJECT
PROJECT OVERVIEW:
OUR AIM:
To enable the smallholder cassava farmers and processors in the sector to increase their yield, earn more income and employ more persons.
OUR APPROACH:
With average yields as low as 8 tons/ha from their farms compared to farmers in other regions of Nigeria who average 25-30tons/ha, PIND works with lead farmers, input firms and agro-dealers to help cassava farmers and processors in the sector to:
- Learn good cassava farming practices to increase their yield
- Access better quality inputs and extension services
- Access improved cassava processing technology to reduce operating costs
- Gain business skills to access finance for working capital
- Access new markets through a cassava aggregation system
SUCCESS STORIES
Mrs Bari Endurance
“As a matter of fact, in my area, they all know me as a Cassava Doctor; they take me as a Cassava Doctor. Any question they have about cassava, they just put me on a phone call and ask: “If my farm is going like this, what should I do?” And I give them the answer. Because of that, I find it very easy to go to those communities for trainings, too. I believe I have reached up to 600 to 700 cassava farmers with training on good agricultural practices. Before I went for that PIND training to become a cassava FSP, I have been farming for about ten (10) to 15 years. And I was just having two (2) persons as staff. Now, gradually, my staff strength is up to five (5). From what I know now, after my trainings, I have the financial confidence in my business—such that if my children are going to school, I don’t need to ask for money or borrow money. It is good to be independent”.

“Before, we can get like 10,000 Naira from one plot after harvesting but now, because of the improved variety of cassava, one can make around 25,000 – 30,000 Naira from one plot. I have 4 kids with my mother and brothers and others…at least we have been feeding very well now…I can send my children to private school . I can treat them very well and I can pay for all those things because of this improvement “
Mrs. Veronica Njokwu
“I have been showcasing what I have learned from what I am being taught by PIND. Nothing stops my cassava from growing; it now yields very well! With improved varieties and applied fertilizer, I get 50 full bags of fat cassavas from 25 ridges.”
How do I join this program?
I have 20 plots of land I want to use for cassava plantation.
Thanks.
