The Niger Delta is witnessing a remarkable transformation towards peace, thanks to the EU-funded project titled, “A Community-Centered Approach to Transforming Criminality and Violence in the Niger Delta”. This initiative, implemented across Bayelsa, Delta, and Rivers States by a consortium that includes Search for Common Ground (SFCG), Stakeholders Democracy Network (SDN), Academic Associates PeaceWorks (AAPW), and PIND Foundation, aims to address the root causes of violence and criminality in the Region.
Community Engagement and Trust-Building
Since its launch, PIND has championed a holistic, community-driven approach to peacebuilding. In January 2024, PIND and its partners conducted Community Entry Visits to 66 communities across the three states. These visits created an open dialogue with local leaders, youth, and women, fostering community-wide support for the project. The result was a strong foundation for future activities, anchored in trust and collaboration.
Strengthening Conflict Monitoring and Response
A critical component of PIND’s contribution has been the enhancement of its Conflict Early Warning and Early Response (EWER) system. In February 2024, PIND trained over 330 new peace monitors across the 66 communities, reinforcing local capacities to identify and mitigate conflicts. These monitors serve as vital links, ensuring prompt and effective communication between communities, traditional institutions, local governments, and security forces, thereby enabling rapid conflict resolution.
Building Leadership for Sustainable Peace
PIND is also investing in leadership development through a series of capacity-building workshops. These workshops have empowered community leaders, youth, and civil society organizations with conflict transformation skills. Notably, a two-day step-down training in Rivers State enhanced the leadership and mediation abilities of 367 leaders, further strengthening the region's peace architecture.

Empowering Youth as Agents of Change
In August 2024, PIND expanded its reach by organizing a youth capacity-strengthening training across 26 communities. The training, which engaged 382 participants, focused on collaborative conflict resolution, equipping the youth with actionable plans to resolve conflicts within their communities.
Looking Ahead
PIND’s journey in advancing peace through this EU-funded initiative exemplifies the organization’s unwavering commitment to sustainable peace in the Niger Delta. By promoting collaboration, empowering local actors, and enhancing conflict resolution mechanisms, PIND is transforming communities into active participants in shaping their future. These ongoing efforts are critical in building long-term resilience and fostering a culture of peace that will benefit the entire region for years to come.
Through this project, PIND is not only addressing immediate conflict dynamics but also laying the groundwork for a more stable, inclusive, and prosperous Niger Delta.
I consider the activities of PIND and its collaborating bodies very inpactful in the Niger Delta region,. Having personally been involved in similar collaborations with similar bodies on advocacy for inclusion of women and mothers in leadership capacities and inclusion of women and mothers in the communities and markets to rise up and be part of the voice of reason to enforce peace among their children, and the youth. The Niger Delta, and the whole of the South South region will be the better for it.
The women and leaders are available for these collaborations, and training,s which will engaged them
in building sustainable peace in their markets, region and communities.
Kudos to sustainable development and peace in our communities
