The Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND) is providing technical support to the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs (MNDA) in designing and developing a regional peacebuilding framework to address conflict and security issues in the region. The Niger Delta Regional Peacebuilding Strategy (NDRPS) will harness and integrate peacebuilding efforts within the region and make them more collaborative. It will drive all conflict prevention, mitigation, and resolution efforts in the Niger Delta.
On Wednesday, November 30, 2022, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, PIND and the MNDA inaugurated a technical working group (TWG) comprised of stakeholders vested in promoting peace in the region, drawn from the nine Niger Delta states. The TWG will design the NDRPS document.
PIND’s Executive Director, Tunji Idowu, was represented at the event by the Advocacy Manager, Chuks Ofulue, who while responding to questions, acknowledged that there had been conflicting plans, and multiple strategies towards addressing the Niger Delta challenges, which has not yielded optimum results.
He said, “Previous plans had no section that deals with peace and security, which is key in solving problems. That’s why we are introducing peace elements and security in the new plan.”
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Olufunso Adebiyi.
At a technical session on December 1, the TWG members received a briefing on how they will support PIND and MNDA on the NDRPS.
The designing and subsequent implementation of the NDRPS is a timely process that will complement current conflict mitigation approaches by the government and other stakeholders in the Niger Delta.
