The Niger Delta was relatively peaceful during the third quarter of 2023. There was a decrease in lethal violence during the period compared to the first and second quarters of the year (see page 2). Data shows significant improvement in the overall peace and security situation in the region. Stakeholders including civil society organizations (CSOs), international development organizations, local peace actors, and government security agencies implemented several interventions that helped to prevent and mitigate communal and political violence, and effectively counteract occasional outbreaks of criminal violence during the quarter.
This quarterly tracker looks at the trends and patterns of conflict risk, lethal violence, and the related pressures on peace and stability at the regional, state and local levels. It is not designed as a conflict analysis, rather it is intended to update stakeholders on the patterns and trends of violence. Understanding the deeper conflict drivers, implications, and mitigating options require a robust participatory qualitative analysis of these trends and patterns by stakeholders.
