Early September, 2021, PIND’s IPDU trained 129 persons from KEFFES (Southern Ijaw and Brass LGAs) and Dodo River (Ekeremor LGA) RDCs on the fundamentals of volunteerism, peacebuilding, conflict incidents reporting and gender mainstreaming in the integrated early warning system, and how to systematically apply the knowledge acquired to report conflict incidents within their communities to PIND’s IPDU SMS-Based EWER System for early response.
The participants who are now Peace Monitors were spread across the three LGAs to ensure efficient conflict monitoring and reporting over the space (See Map).
The selection of the participants mainstreamed Gender and Social Inclusion (GESI) as 58% of the participants were male and 42 percent, female. Also, 71% of the respondents were youth between the age-range of 18 to 35 years, while there were two (2) Persons With Disability (PWD).
An assessment at the end of the training showed that about 80% of the Peace Monitors sent in properly drafted incident reports which effectively captured the incident narrative, location of the incident, parties involved, gender and the time of occurrence.
Even more, 94% of the Peace Monitors affirmed that the training would positively influence their attitude to peacebuilding in their communities as they would be committed to contributing to the overall peace of the area through reporting of conflict incidents or events capable of triggering conflicts that can escalate to violence. Also, 64% of the Peace Monitors highlighted that they would be able to efficiently transfer the knowledge they have gained from the EWER training to other members of their community.
