Livestock production accounts for about 6% of Gross Domestic Product1. Chicken and small ruminants (sheep and goat) form an important economic and ecological function in the agricultural systems in most rural communities. They are mainly kept for immediate cash source especially when things go tough. They are a good source of meat, eggs, wool and manure, and sometimes kept as savings or for risk distribution. They significantly contribute to the socio-economic life of many rural, peri-urban and urban poor households as they provide income, animal protein and intangible benefits including cultural and ceremonial purposes.
