Gbagira Community in Ilaje LGA of Ondo State on April 5, 2019 hosted stakeholders from the private, public and development sectors at the launch of the pilot of an energy access model for off -grid communities in the Niger Delta using Energy Cabins.
Gbagira is a coastal community located along a stretch of coastal settlements along the Apostle Canal in the Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State. Like many other ‘last mile’ communities, it remains undeserved with electricity.
The Executive Director of PIND Foundation, Dr. Dara Akala congratulated all the people of Gbagira and partners at the launch of the Energy Cabin. “We are very happy part of the launch of an Energy Cabin in Gbagira, Ilaje LAGA of Ondo State on April 5, 2019. The project is a pilot of an energy access model for off -grid communities in the Niger Delta using Energy Cabins, and we feel a great of achievement”, he said.
PIND, which had conducted an assessment of four coastal communities (Awoye, Molutehin, Odofado and Gbagira), subsequently facilitated a power purchase agreement between A4&T (a renewable energy solution provider based in Lagos) and Gbagira which showed the greatest stakeholder and investment readiness.
Through PIND’s facilitation, the leadership and people of Gbagira community signed a power purchase agreement with A4&T Power solutions for an initial period of 1 year. This ensures that the business is able to deploy resources to this community without any fear of competition from similar providers.
The launch showcased the Energy Cabin model, which has an aggregated electricity demand of 15kWh in the pilot community to stakeholders. An Energy cabin is an assembly of PV panels, batteries and control systems in a 20ft cabin/enclosure that easily becomes an electricity plant with access points for electricity purchase and distribution.

Because of the enormity of development issues in the Niger Delta, at PIND Foundation, our overarching strategy is to work in partnerships with a diverse collection of partners, including bilateral and multi-lateral aid agencies, federal and state government agencies, private companies and civil society organizations to take advantage of combining resources, capabilities and technical expertise with diverse partners for greater collective impact.
