The Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND) and Okomu Oil Palm Company Plc (OOPC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at fostering community development, peacebuilding, and sustainable economic growth within the Niger Delta. The signing ceremony, held on 12th December 2024 in Benin, Edo State, marks a significant milestone in the commitment of both organizations to co-create strategic initiatives that will enhance community relations and drive economic empowerment in Okomu and surrounding communities.
This collaboration leverages PIND’s proven peacebuilding and community stabilization model to address complex socio-economic challenges in the region. It will include capacity-building workshops, professional training on operational safety and community security management, and support for OOPC’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects.
Speaking on behalf of Mr. Tunji Idowu, PIND’s Executive Director, Dr. Effiong Essien, Program Director of PIND, emphasized the significance of the partnership. “This MOU represents a new chapter in building peace and fostering sustainable development in the Niger Delta. By aligning our expertise and resources with OOPC, we aim to create lasting impact in these communities, addressing conflicts and promoting economic empowerment in tangible ways.”
Dr. Graham Hefer, Managing Director of Okomu Oil Palm Company, highlighted the enduring commitment of OOPC to its host communities. “OOPC has worked with its host communities through CSR initiatives to foster development for over a decade. This partnership with PIND further cements our commitment to addressing critical areas such as peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and sustainable development. With PIND’s credibility and expertise, we are confident this collaboration will bring visible, long-term benefits to both the communities and our operations.”
The MOU will also see both organizations collaborate on a Community Needs Assessment (CNA) and the development of a Community Development Plan (CDP). These activities will align OOPC’s CSR programs with the actual needs of the communities, fostering inclusive growth. The partnership will also focus on sustainable economic development initiatives in agriculture, youth employment, renewable energy access, and finance, creating opportunities for long-term economic stability.
To ensure effective implementation, a joint steering committee comprising members from PIND, OOPC, and community representatives will guide project strategies, monitor progress, and ensure active participation in all phases of execution.
With this MOU, PIND and Okomu Oil Palm Company reaffirm their dedication to driving meaningful change in the Niger Delta, enhancing community security, and creating avenues for sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
