As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance agricultural productivity and promote sustainable farming practices, the Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND), in partnership with the Food Systems, Land Use and Restoration Impact Program (FOLUR-IP), recently concluded a transformative 3-day Training of Trainers (ToT) program in Cross River State.
Held from September 26-28, 2024, this intensive program brought together 30 extension officers and lead farmers from across the region to focus on Climate-Smart Good Agricultural Practices (CS-GAP), a critical approach to improving the resilience of the cocoa and oil palm sectors in the face of climate change. The participants were equipped with advanced skills designed to enhance crop yields, improve resilience against climate threats, and ensure long-term sustainability for smallholder farmers.
In addition to core CS-GAP techniques, the training also introduced crop diversification strategies to address income instability caused by long crop gestation periods and unpredictable seasonal patterns. These innovative approaches will enable farmers to stabilize their income while adapting to changing environmental conditions. With the newly acquired knowledge, these trainers are set to empower over 5,000 smallholder farmers across the Niger Delta, promoting widespread adoption of climate-resilient agricultural practices.
“This program is a game-changer for smallholder farmers who are at the mercy of climate change,” said Roy Ndidi, PIND’S Market Systems Development Advisor. “By equipping local leaders with climate-smart techniques and diversification strategies, we are laying the foundation for a more resilient and prosperous agricultural sector.”
This initiative is a testament to PIND’s commitment to driving sustainable agricultural development and economic resilience among smallholder farmers in the Niger Delta. By empowering local leaders to spearhead the adoption of climate-smart agriculture, PIND continues to play a crucial role in enhancing both productivity and sustainability in the region’s key agricultural sectors.
