PIND’s Market Systems Development project supports farmers and small enterprises in key agricultural sectors in the Niger Delta to improve their productivity, leading to an increase in income and reduction of poverty. The primary objective is to identify channels and prioritize the linkages between growth opportunities in agriculture and youth unemployment and skills gaps in the Niger Delta region.
To broaden the worthy efforts, the project also envisions finding agricultural market system(s) with the most potential to create jobs; recommendations on ranking interventions to address failures or weaknesses in the agricultural market system(s), as well as documents that will ideally serve as contextual information for successful future initiatives.
Over the years, PIND worked with multiple partners and market actors to implement economic development interventions addressing multiple foundational problems across five agricultural value chains (aquaculture, cassava, cocoa, palm oil, and poultry) and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The interventions increased the number of men and women experiencing sustainable positive changes in income and attaining gainful employment.

As a founder of the Girl to Women Research and Development Centre, I have benefitted from PIND’s capacity building interventions targeted at civil society organizations in the Niger Delta. I participated in several PIND training, first as a beneficiary and later as a consultant on gender issues. PIND helps strengthen CSO’s and improves their capacity and visibility to attract funding. With the support and mentoring I received from PIND, my organization could access grants from the government, the private sector and partners. PIND was helpful in terms of funding and providing capacity enhancement at various levels.
