In celebration of International Youth Day 2024, themed “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,” PIND Foundation is pleased to present its strategic initiatives that utilize digital innovations to empower youth across Nigeria’s Niger Delta region. This year’s event highlights how digital tools are reshaping opportunities and advancing sustainable development, and PIND is at the forefront of this transformative movement. Using its key program areas, Economic Development and Peacebuilding, PIND is creating opportunities to improve the lives of young people in the region through skill acquisition, capacity building, and income generation.
Since the inception of the Peace Champions program in 2022, PIND, through its Peacebuilding program, has trained and mentored over 270 young individuals to counter violent extremism, promote peace and security locally and regionally, and amplify their voices in mainstream and social media. Each year, 90 participants aged 18 to 35 are selected, introduced to PIND’s Conflict Early Warning and Early Response (EWER) system, and trained to send messages to PIND’s Integrated Peace and Development Unit’s (IPDU) SMS-based EWER platform in real-time.
PIND aims to enhance the capacity of these participants in peacebuilding and conflict reporting. Peace Champions are expected to report verified conflict early warning information to the PIND IPDU SMS-based platform and voluntarily carry out peacebuilding interventions in their communities or workplaces.
Our Youth Employment Pathways Program addresses the demand for market-relevant skills in a rapidly evolving job market. By incorporating digital learning opportunities, the program has equipped over 9,000 young people with the necessary skills for today’s competitive workforce. More than 3,435 youth have secured waged employment, income opportunities, and entrepreneurial ventures in dynamic sectors, with over 1,000 young persons benefitting from the ICT sector. This emphasis on digital education ensures that young people are prepared for emerging job opportunities and can contribute to sustainable economic growth.
The Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) Program underscores the PIND Foundation’s commitment to fostering an inclusive environment. By addressing gender and social disparities, the program ensures that all youth, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds, have access to essential resources and support. Digital platforms are used to reach and assist these groups, promoting equity and ensuring that every young person has the opportunity to thrive.
As we join the global community to commemorate this year’s International Youth Day, we remain committed to leveraging digital advancements to empower youth. Through our targeted programs in peacebuilding, employment pathways, agricultural innovation, renewable energy, and inclusivity, we are dedicated to creating a supportive environment where young people can excel and contribute to sustainable development. Our efforts reflect a steadfast commitment to using digital pathways to shape a future where youth confidently lead and make meaningful contributions to their communities and beyond.
