Youth unemployment remains a significant challenge in Nigeria, affecting social stability and economic growth despite ongoing intervention efforts. Addressing this issue effectively requires exploring innovative strategies for job creation and economic empowerment for young people.
This need for innovation was emphasized during a panel session at the Lagos State Employment Summit 3.0, themed “Job Creation: Uniting For Impact: Create, Collaborate, Change.” PIND’s Executive Director, Tunji Idowu, highlighted the urgency of adopting creative approaches to tackle unemployment. Held on July 3, 2024, and organized by the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund, the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment, and the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, the summit underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in enhancing job creation.
The panel discussion, titled “Innovative Ways for Reducing Unemployment and Enhancing Job Creation,” provided PIND with an opportunity to showcase its achievements through the Youth Employment Pathways (YEP) program. Since its inception in 2018, YEP has trained over 8,336 young people and connected more than 3,435 with waged employment, income opportunities, and entrepreneurship in sectors like Integrated Agriculture, Construction, ICT, Fashion Design, and services.
Tunji Idowu described the YEP model as a testament to PIND’s innovative approach to reducing youth unemployment in the Niger Delta. He emphasized PIND’s commitment to continuous learning, embracing mistakes, and equipping youths with the skills required to adapt and thrive in Nigeria’s evolving economic landscape.
“Our YEP program goes beyond training; we are transforming youth employability in the Niger Delta,” remarked Tunji Idowu. “By providing vocational and technical skills, we are fostering a generation of leaders who can make meaningful contributions to their communities.”
The panel also featured Mrs. Nwamara Victor, CEO of Amy6015 and a PIND YEP implementing partner, who highlighted the program’s significant impact on promoting youth entrepreneurship. She emphasized the shared vision with PIND to create a thriving environment for young people in the Niger Delta.
Ms. Chiemela Anosike, a YEP beneficiary, shared her personal experiences, underscoring the program’s positive influence on her career journey. She stressed the importance of acquiring technical and vocational skills alongside theoretical knowledge to enhance competitiveness and resourcefulness.
Ayobakuro Zigha, CEO of ZAL Group and an entrepreneur in the Niger Delta contributed to the discussion by highlighting the potential of innovative strategies for youth development as a solution to regional unemployment.
