The Niger Delta’s peace, conflict, and security landscape remained dynamic, with notable changes recorded in the second quarter (Q2) of 2026 compared to the first quarter (Q1). The security situation deteriorated progressively from Q1 2026, with lethal violence increasing by 50.5% and reported conflict-related fatalities rising from 99 in Q1 to 149 in Q2 (see page 2 for details). According to PIND’s P4P Peace Map, the main drivers of lethal violence during the period included criminal activities, particularly kidnapping for ransom and clashes between hoodlums and security forces; communal conflicts over land and natural resources; natural disasters; and clashes between rival cult gangs across the region.
