The 2023 PIND Prize for Niger Delta Development Reporting was awarded to Yekeen Akinwale, the Abuja Bureau Chief of TheCable, for his exceptional report on “How Low-Carbon, Cost-Effective Energy is Empowering Coastal Communities” in the Niger Delta.
In his award-winning story, Akinwale shed light on the energy poverty faced by coastal communities like Evbuwa village in Orhionmwon LGA, Edo State. His report explored the positive impact of clean energy solutions that are helping to alleviate the region’s reliance on unclean, harmful energy sources, thereby improving both environmental sustainability and the livelihoods of local residents.
This recognition marks Akinwale’s second consecutive win in the Niger Delta Development Reporting category, having also won the inaugural award in 2022. Akinwale’s work is a testament to the power of investigative journalism in uncovering solutions and driving change in the Niger Delta.
